SONY XPERIA TABLET Z : Specifications and Review

Body

Sony has made a comeback in the tablet segment after its previous attempts with its new launch Xperia Tablet Z . Its Tablet S had a curved edge while the Tablet P had a foldable design. Xperia Tablet Z is water-resistant and dustproof and is basically a larger version of the Xperia Z smartphone.

Specifications: 10.1 inch display; Android v4.1; 1.5Ghz quad core processor; 2GB RAM; 16GB internal storage, expandable up to 64GB; 8 MP rear/2.2MP front camera; 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth; 6000 mAh battery, NFC, MHL, 495 grams.

DESIGN : It looks like a much larger version of the Xperia Z smartphone but without the glass back. It's a beautifully designed. At 6.9mm, Xperia Tablet Z is the thinnest tablet around - iPad fourth generation is 9.4mm thick, in case you are wondering. It weighs 495 grams and for a 10-inch tablet the weight to dimensions ratio of the device makes it easy to carry.

USER INTERFACE : Like the Sony Xperia smartphones, this tablet too is heavily skinned. It can be unlocked by swiping the lockscreen. The Walkman app and the camera can be accessed directly from the homescreen. With no physical keys, controls, apps and options have been added to the corners.

HARDWARE : The Xperia Tablet Z includes a powerful 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB RAM, 3G (but no calling), memory expansion, dual cameras, dual speakers and infrared emitter.

CAMERA :Usually, the camera of a tablet isn't used much. But Sony has added the iAuto feature found in the Sony Xperia Z smartphone to the tablet as well. This mode detects the subject and accordingly changes the camera setting. The images captured in bright settings are good but the lack of flash makes it unusable in low-light conditions.

BATTERY : The tablet comes with a giant 6000mAh battery but it has got an average battery backup that lasts approximately close to five days with a couple of hours of use every day. On continuous usage, it lasts just over five hours.

FEATURES : Sony also offers a STAMINA mode, which as per the company can improve the standby time by automatically shutting down battery-draining apps whenever the screen is off and starting them up again when the screen is back on.

PROS :

  1. Superb design
  2. impressively light
  3. Brilliant HD screen
  4. Dust and Water proof

CONS :

  1. Steeply priced
  2. Camera performance for stills could have been better
  3. Battery backup could've been better
  4. Tinny audio
  5. Ports behind fiddly flaps

CONCLUSION : A superb tablet, but overpriced.
Slick design and useful features make the Tablet Z Sony’s best yet — but is it worth the money?
